Volunteer Squash and Gourds!
Time for another #HarvestUpdate! These squash and gourds are known as “volunteer” vegetables. Their seeds took root in the Promise Garden this summer when left behind over the winter by gardeners’ compost or birds that spread the seeds. This is a fairly common, lucky surprise in community gardens like ours, and we cannot wait until they are fully grown and ready to be harvested and shared with the community.
Last year, at least 100 pounds of the green squash pictured (Trombone Squash) grew at Promise Garden, tasting similar to Zucchini but sweeter. Hopefully this second generation will be just as successful!
